A comparison of one-third rate convolutional codes with the (15,5) BCH Code,

J. B. McCrumb Lt.

Abstract: This report proposes and compares convolutional codes with the (15,5) BCH code. Word-error probabilities are computed for each of the codes with the convolutional codes performing at least an order of magnitude better than the (15,5) BCH code. The convolutional codes may be implemented with a considerable reduction in equipment and circuit complexity, compared with the (15,5) BCH code. NOTE: LT McCrumb was guest worker -Jan 2 -March 15, 1970. Work supported by U. S. Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, Calif.
