A note on selected definitions of effective antenna heights

Abstract: This report describes an experiment in which some computations are compared with available field strength data. Several models are proposed which compute an effective height by using a least squares fit to various sections of the terrain profile. Also proposed are several models based on a Rayleigh criterion for roughness to compute a roughness (or scattering) factor. Cumulative distributions are presented of the attenuation error for each combination of an effective height model with a roughness n1.odel. Con­sideration of all nine antenna-height measurements indicates that the combination of structural heights (model I) and exponential factor (model B) has the smallest medians and interdecile ranges of any group.
