Abstract: A description of the development and details of a range estimation computer program is presented. The program was tested with about 1700 range estimates with known sources. While the median range estimate errors generally fell in the 5-10 percent range, substantial number of estimates were in error by greater than 20 percent. The principal reason for these large errors is that the wrong propagation modes are chosen to be used in making the estimates. The principal factor responsible for the width of the error distributions when the correct modes are chosen appears to be the height of the bottom of the reflecting layer estimated from backscatter observations. Future work should concentrate upon correcting these errors.
