Abstract: This report presents an overview of guided optical communications via optical fiber waveguides, describing the techniques, a sampling of currently available devices, components and systems, and some typical applications. Fabrication of a rudimentary optical video teleconferencing link is discussed, and systems design trade-offs are weighted. The scope of the report is deliberately broad as opposed to in-depth examination of any signal problem area of this emerging technology. Recommendations are made as to which specific technological areas require attention in order to expedite the growth of a viable communications medium.

Disclaimer: Certain commercial equipment, components, and software may be identified in this report to specify adequately the technical aspects of the reported results. In no case does such identification imply recommendation or endorsement by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, nor does it imply that the equipment or software identified is necessarily the best available for the particular application or uses.
