Video Quality Metrics Tutorial

This 2012 tutorial is an overview of the algorithms available in the VQM software, including guidance on which calibration options and models suit different purposes. Other topics covered are the different types of models, mapping multiple subjective datasets onto a single scale, objective video quality model validation, and the Consumer Digital Video Library.

This tutorial uses Microsoft PowerPoint® 2010 slides with audio. Start the slideshow to hear the audio. Subtitles are provided in the notes section for each page. Microsoft provides support on ways to view a PowerPoint presentation for Windows® on their website.

Spatial Filtering

McGurk Effect

This video demonstrates how the eyes and ears work together to understand speech. This is called audiovisual perception or cross-modal perception. Audio of a woman saying "ba ba ba" has been dubbed over the picture of that woman saying "da da da." Your perception of what she is saying changes as you open and close your eyes.

Subtitles are not provided, because the McGurk effect is an audiovisual effect.

Tools for Video Quality in Public Safety

The ITS Video Quality Research program participates in multi-agency DHS-sponsored video quality research programs that engage public safety practitioners, Federal partners, manufacturers, and representatives of standards making bodies to improve the way video technologies serve the public safety community. The Guide to Defining Video Quality Requirements, and its associated Recommendations Tool, were designed to help practitioners with little or no technical expertise in video describe requirements for their video quality needs and select key video system components.
