Gain characterization of the RF measurement path

J. Wayde Allen

Abstract: In radio frequency (RF) measurements the gain (or loss) of the signal path connecting the measurement equipment to the measurement reference plane must be accounted for. This tutorial paper discusses the various definitions of gain, and how to determine the gain using either a calibrated signal generator, noise source, or network analyzer.

Keywords: gain; calibration; available power; cable loss; delivered power; mismatch
