Abstract: Ionospheric irregularities represent departures from the ambient of up to 50% in electron density. Periods of high magnetic activity exhibit direction-of-arrival deviations which are more frequent and of greater magnitude than quiet periods. Mills T processing of backscattered signals with the present arrays does not appear very practical, and suitable array modifications would much improve the situation. Errors in plasma frequency mapping in remote areas by use of backscatter are discussed, and a plasma frequency mapping computer program to accommodate the backscatter data is described.
